Ucronia originates in curator Pedro Bandeira’s research into a series of previously unseen drawings by Eduardo Souto de Moura, developed between 1975 and 1976. The project emerges as a revisiting of these drawings, or “imaginary monuments” — capriccios that evoke the idea of architecture’s disciplinary autonomy.
At the invitation of the curatorial team, 18—25 Research Studio (Filipe Alves and Luca Martinucci), in close dialogue with Eduardo Souto de Moura, develops a body of work that transforms the archive into new forms of perception and interpretation, granting the drawings a timeless plausibility. Bringing together visual culture, the history of representation, and technological experimentation, Ucronia proposes an approach that shifts these materials from their original context into an expanded field between architecture, image, and fiction.
Ucronia in Barcelona
In July 2026, Ucronia will be presented at Moco Museum Barcelona through an installation bringing together a series of videos developed by 18—25 Research Studio, offering insight into some of the atmospheres and representational languages that shape the project.
Through moving images, fragments of an ongoing research are revealed, making visible the ways in which the archive can be activated as a living matter of creation. This presentation functions as a prelude to the exhibition and the book, both of which will be presented in 2027 at Casa da Arquitectura in Matosinhos.
